SSE Business Energy contract features

Our business energy experts have reviewed the SSE Business Energy Terms and Conditions and have summarised the important points here:

Business energy products

Business Energy Products

SSE offers a range of tailored business electricity and gas products, including fixed and flexible plans, with the option of 100% renewable energy to suit various business sizes and needs. SSE exclusively offers non-domestic services, having sold its domestic energy portfolio to Ovo Energy in 2020.

Payment methods

Payment Methods

SSE sets your contract prices based on Direct Debit payment. You will be charged an additional 0.5p per kWh if you choose a different payment method or cancel your direct debit. However, if you choose not to pay by DD, you can pay online, via bank transfer, over the phone, or by post.

End of contract

End of Contract

When your SSE business energy contract nears its end, SSE typically sends a renewal letter around 90 days before the contract expires. This letter will include a renewal offer for a new fixed plan. If you do not renew or switch to a new plan, you will automatically move onto their out-of-contract rates, which are considerably higher than a fixed plan.

Credit Check

Credit Checks

Credit checks are conducted to evaluate your business’s financial stability when applying for an SSE business energy contract. This process helps SSE determine the risk of non-payment and tailor contract terms accordingly. SSE reserves the right to deny a new contract based on an insufficient credit score.

Energy Management Tools

Energy Management Tools

Tools like SSE Clarity and SSE Foresight provide business energy monitoring analytics. SSE Clarity offers real-time monitoring and reporting on energy usage, enabling businesses to identify inefficiencies and improve business energy efficiency. SSE Foresight delivers predictive insights and recommendations based on specific energy patterns.

Smart Metering

Smart Metering

SSE offers smart meter and sub-meter installations that help businesses monitor and reduce their energy usage, contributing to cost savings and efficiency. Corporate Power Purchase Agreements

SSE is one of the most established Corporate PPA providers in Britain, giving businesses direct access to long-term renewable electricity contracts sourced from SSE’s own wind and hydro assets. These agreements provide price certainty, support net zero planning and allow businesses to secure verifiable renewable electricity without investing in on-site infrastructure.

On-site generation

On-site generation

SSE works with businesses to develop commercial solar PV and other distributed energy projects on their own sites. This includes design, installation and optimisation of systems that reduce reliance on grid imports and create predictable long-term savings. Larger organisations can also combine on-site generation with battery storage to improve resilience.

Smart building and heat electrification projects

Smart building and heat electrification projects

SSE also works with larger commercial and industrial customers to upgrade buildings with modern technologies such as heat pumps, LED lighting and control systems. These projects are designed to reduce long-term operating costs while lowering carbon footprints.

What makes SSE different from other business energy suppliers?

SSE stands out from other business energy suppliers due to its unique roles and strong focus on infrastructure management and renewable energy. Here are the key aspects that differentiate SSE:

Multiple Roles:

Unlike many energy companies, SSE is an energy generator, a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and a business energy supplier, managing electricity distribution networks in Northern Scotland and Central Southern England.

Renewable Energy Focus:

SSE is the UK’s largest renewable energy generator, with significant investments in wind farms, hydropower plants, and solar energy projects. This emphasis on sustainability sets them apart.

Expert Energy Auditors:

SSE employs a nationwide business energy audit team that assists businesses in identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency. This team can provide ESOS assessments, a necessary compliance procedure for large business energy customers.

SSE business – FAQs

Below, we answer the most common questions regarding SSE.

  • SSE Renewables – develops and operates wind and hydro generation assets.

  • SSEN Transmission – operates the high voltage transmission network in the north of Scotland.
  • SSE Thermal – runs flexible gas generation and energy storage assets.
  • SSE Energy Solutions – supplies business energy and provides EV, on-site generation and energy optimisation services.
